Conway

SUNDAY DINNER WASN’T usually a big deal, but after spring calving, Conway’s mom liked to gather her family together. His mom, Peggy, was a total spitfire. Nobody told her no, not even her husband, Merle. So even though Conway’s sister-in-law, Mary Beth, was nearing her due date, she and Hudson didn’t decline Mama’s invitation. When they arrived, both were happy and smiling.

Strangely, Conway’s twin brother wasn’t around. Normally, he was the jokester of the family, but he’d been unlike himself for a while. Conway couldn’t pinpoint what had changed, nor did he have the time to figure it out. He’d hoped whatever was bothering him would pass sooner rather than later.

“Waiting for your girl, are you?” Hudson asked, peeking his head out the screen door.

“Yep. She should be here any minute.” Conway was out on the front porch. Elise had insisted on driving out so he didn’t have to drive to her town and then drive back. He wasn’t spending the night with her tonight, though he wanted to. He had an early meeting with area ranchers at five thirty in the morning, but he sure as heck would be spending the night tomorrow.

“It’s been weeks since we last talked about her. You haven’t shared anything about her. It’s not like you to keep secrets.”

“Wasn’t keeping her secret. Just wanted to be sure she’d stick around. No sense in talking her up if she wasn’t worth it, know what I mean?”

“I guess.” Hudson sat in the rocking chair next to Conway. “Then you like her a lot?”

“I do.” He more than liked Elise. He’d fallen head over heels in love with her. Now that they’d been intimate, it was like all the pieces of them had come together perfectly. He wanted a future with her. Babies with her. If dinner went well with her meeting his family, it would be like a sign that she was the one, and he’d be ready to get down on one knee.

“So how long have you been with her?”

“We started dating a couple of months ago.”

“Dang, that’s a long time for you. Probably why Wyatt’s got his shorts in a knot.”

“What do you mean?” Conway planted his elbows on his knees, leaning forward for a better look down the road.

“Well, he’s jealous. He’s the only one of us who doesn’t have somebody.”

Conway eyed Hudson, unsure if his older brother was being serious or not.

“He’s never wanted a girlfriend. The dude is a player. You know that.” Hell, Wyatt liked to juggle multiple women at one time. He’d say, The more the merrier. If what Hudson said was true, and Wyatt wanted to be in a real relationship, Conway hoped his brother was finally becoming more responsible. Maybe he’d even start doing his job, which would free up Conway’s schedule.

“Well, I think there was a girl he liked, but she wasn’t interested.”

“Really? That’s shocking to hear. No girl ever turned Wyatt down.”

“I know. Probably messed with his head. You know he’s a cocky turd. If a woman rejected him, it’d surely screw him up.
